AttachSmart is a new nifty little utility that you can use to email documents (e.g. photos) as attachments. You can also use it to view/check the documents (it will start the appropriate viewer based on the document type), and do simple file management. By the creators of PocketTV.

AttachSmart also makes it easier to save files received as attachments.

It's a "must have" since there is no "Attach file" command in the Smartphone Inbox!

Download AttachSmart Classic (free)

Download AttachSmart Signature Edition (for application-locked Smartphones)

Another interesting feature of AttachSmart: It's the first Self-Replicating Smartphone application . No, it is not a virus, but it is capable of sending itself (by email) to your Smartphone-enabled friends.

Please try it and give us feedback (e.g. suggestions, complaints, etc).

Enjoy!

We've uploaded BETA-2 on http://smartphone.net/software_detail.asp?...teid=279&id=332

It fixes some shell-related problems (e.g. window activates but with no menu-bar etc).

I think it would be nice to have a list of "favorite" and pre-defined locations, e.g. the folders where the phone places the photos, the audio notes, etc. So that you would not have to browse in the filesystem to find the document you are looking for. Those locations may depend on the model of phone, evidently.

Maybe we'll put all that in the "Pro" version of SmartAttach...

Naturally it's the same.

It's the SmartAttach product page on Smartphone.NET.

The latest version of SmartAttach is always available from this page.

You don't need more than 10 sec to install it and one minute to use it, despite the limited documentation.

The only trick is navigating with the file browser. If you set "View > Details", you can see file sizes and you can use the LEFT cursor-key to go UP in the parent folder (instead of having to select the "Go UP" command in the menu).

If you want to view a file, then you can usually return to SmartAttach by pressing the BACK key (or Home then SmartAttach in the recent apps).

havent played with the email function much yet on my phone. But, after reading this post, does it mean we cant send attachments in our emails without this program?

No problem as its freeware but i would have thought that being a MS smartphone that you would be able to send attachments in emails without needing extra progs- bit stupid if you cant

> But, after reading this post, does it mean we cant send attachments in our emails without this program?

Microsoft Inbox application (on the Smartphone) does not let you send email with attachments.

Various file manager (e.g. Smart Explorer) also offer the email attachment feature.

SmartAttach is the simplest and smalest utility that is designed mainly for this purpose, although it has limited file management features (e.g. you can rename and delete files).

I think that's a design choice. MSFT wanted to simplify Smartphone (compared to Pocket PC), so they removed many useful features from the API.

For example, with PIE (Internet Explorer), you can go back to the previous page, but there is not Next command to return to the next page  . This makes the browsing experience quite terrible! (because it's so slow at reloading pages).

@The PocketTV Team

my suggestions/comments about the SmartAttach are:

1. when composing email message (Email Document) on the SmartAttach window; could you also use the back button as the same function as "Go up" in the Menu list? it's much easier to press a single button to return to the previous window (folder you’re into) rather than pressing more than 1 button
2. is it also limited to pics and tones only? considering that it’ll surely eats up the IPSM space, how big are the files that can be attached to it?

i’m still trying to evaluate it thoroughly…
but so far, it's indeed a great prog! keep up the good work!:D

yes, i understand what you mean, but unfortunately the Email message dialog that we use is in fact the one of the Inbox application, it is not a dialog that we have implemented.

and as you know, on smartphone, the BACK key has a different semantic when you are in a dialog that contain text input fields (the BACK key is used to delete characters in text input, and it does not return to the previous window in that case.

However, once you have sent a message, you get back to SmartAttach, and if you want to cancel, select Cancel in the menu (Menu + 7 = two buttons pressed). You can also do Home + OK (Action button).

> is it also limited to pics and tones only?

of course not, you can attach ANY sort of file!

> considering that it’ll surely eats up the IPSM space, how big are the files that can be attached to it?

Not sure, but I think the biggest problem is probably rather the time it will take to send large files, and the cost in data bandwidth. I would recommend to not send files larger than a few 100KB. You can select View > Details in the file selector menu, to see the size of each file.

When you send an email with a file attached, i don't know if a copy of the file is made. probably not. probably it will just read the file at its current location when the mail is sent. to be verified. we don't control that, since the mail is send by the regular Inbox application.

> i’m still trying to evaluate it thoroughly… but so far, it's indeed a great prog! keep up the good work!:D

Thanks. Actually it does not do much, really, but we have plans to improve it, e.g. to provide direct access to the folders where common documents are stored (e.g. the photos taken with the phone's camera, etc).

This way you would not have to browse much in the file system!

I figure most casual Smartphone users will not even know what a file system is!

Starting at BETA-8, you can select to email voice notes, ring-tones or photos (or any type of file if you want, too).

The send-or-view-or-cancel confirmation window appears after a document has been selected.

If you select View, then you can easiely return to SmartAttach to send it, generally by pressing the BACK (<-) button, or from the HOME screen.

SmartAttach remembers the location (i.e. folder) of the file of each category, so generally you will not have to browse to look for photos or voice mails etc..., you will arrive just where your documents are stored, in the phone or in the SD card.

Please tell us if you like these new features!

Yes, you would have to save the attachment (a CAB file) and open it. And of course, you would need to confirm that you want to install the application!

> Is there any way to track how far this application spreads? as a purely academic theory, to see how effective this method of distribution is?

Yes, good question! Unless we add some sort of registration with our server, we won't know. But the registration could be mostly automatic. We'll see what we'll do, but this is a good question.
