other than totally disabling the auto-rotation feature, is there a way to disable it specifically for Messaging app only? coz sometimes i would text while lying down or just place my phone on the table while Messaging is open, it's annoying when it switches to landscape.

if you have wm6.5 ROM
go to hklm\Software\Autorotation
change the program name to an irrelevant naem. for example, "message" to "messagex"
you need to find correct application name, what you see in windows title is the name on registry
Note: if you delete a name, you need to decrease the "Count" Value.
