--------------------------------------------------------
OLD FIRST POST :

Hi !

I am an old Hack'n'dev user (fladnaG) whitch consist to port Linux on Palm Handhelds.

Now I sold my Palms xD.

The andromnia team works very well, Android is beautiful but it isn't as "Linux" as this. No console access, no possibility to change D.E. (Desktop Environment, like KDE or GNOME). And as said by finaldestiny in post 14, the more linux options we have, the better is ;)

Some talk about MidLinux seems hard to put on Omnia... Too heavy (RAM : 256MB+ memory/512MB+ recommended, source : http://www.ubuntu.com/products/mobile )

So, with the Hack'n'dev team we put Linux on it with the OPIE Desktop Environment. Right know I'm downloading a old root image of it and I'm gonna try it...

For the Linux users, OPIE is a "mobile" version of KDE.

Posted Image

There is also a "mobile" version of GNOME, GPE, but not very beautiful.

Posted Image

Sorry, i forgot one desktop environment : enlightenment, which can also be used on a desktop computer... One of my favourite ! I got it to work on my palm centro...
Posted Image
This is a desktop pic, because i sold my centro. It can render like this (on a smaller screen of course^^) or there is a mobile version (can choose @ startup :D )

There is also a mobile version of Ubuntu for Zaurus, called Zubuntu that i'll try.

Posted Image

The last picture is a dream : having the same system on my laptop and on my phone ^^, but I think we will not be able to call =(

So, I am trying all of these, I will give you feedback, test results and download links if you want. Just ask me.

BTW, sorry for my poor English, I don't listen all English lessons... xD And the baccalaureate results are coming... ^^

EDIT : Added Enlightenment D.E.
EDIT 2 : New news interface :)

Hi !

I've got news !

OPIE is working without any problems (except the drivers, because i'm using my last build of andromnia's kernel...)
The only two big bugs are :
-> The up window title, too big (will reduce size)
-> Because of the early stage of the kernel build, the suspend mode don't work. this means that after some seconds (60 sec if i'm right) the Omnia freeze and don't wake up.

Zubuntu seems to work ;) but in text mode only :| and without virtual keyboard, so no login input =(. Will try a script to login and startx automaticaly.

Enlightenment got a bug : the screen is "splitted" and no screen alignment is possible (the cross go out of screen during calibration due to the screen problem.)
Maybe a framebuffer error ?

GPE, as Enlightenment, could have a damn framebuffer error.

Trying to solve right now.

Wait until tomorrow (France time zone, GMT +1), you will have a video on youtube (because i don't have a digital cameraright now, i wait for my sister's xD)

Thank you guys for support.

I'm guessing this dual boots with Windows Mobile? Any chance of calling thru linux or are their no drivers to support it? Anyways, terrific job and great work. Would be awesome to have both Linux and Windows running at the same time. Another definition to add to the term "smart phone" to our Omnia's.

i GUESS Xubuntu can run on Omnia:

System Requirements

Xubuntu is available for PC, 64-Bit PC.

CDs require 128MB RAM to run, or 192MB RAM to install. Desktop install requires at least 1.5GB of free space on your hard disk.

•installs on systems with less than about 192MB of RAM on Alternative CD

Wow Xubuntu would be amazing!!
Do I just need to replace the kernal?
I was thinking of trying a VMWARE and then copying the files over with the Kernal from android to SD card.

fladna9,

Good job on porting the OPIE! I wish your vid was clearer so that I could see the OS a bit better though...so I'm really looking forward to your next set of pics/video!

Also, please reconsider your position on andromnia! The more linux options we have, the better ;)

Thanks for your idea, StarVision. But there is a problem with xubuntu : did you find a CD Player on our Omnia ? ^^
And I've tried to put a Ubuntu Live CD on our Omnia, but the cd structure is very different (called casper) from others live cd... Don't work for now.

Hi thescope ! ;)
Be careful, when you speak of handhelds :
-> The kernel is that Image.nothing file. It contains drivers and the boot sequence, and a shell command. It is build for a device, here for Omnia.
-> The "rootfs", stands for "Root File System" may or may not be build for a or some device in particular.

I don't think this will work. But you can try, if you want...

Thanks guys, any idea is welcome here, so don't be shy and post here ^^

In some hours, I will post some screenshots (no movies, i've got an another camera, but poor quality ^^), and if I've time, I'll post :
-> the OPIE Root-FS (from Hack'n'dev community, a little tuned)
-> My last build of the Omnia's kernel.
-> A setup tutorial of course, even for non-linux users (will be easy to understand, I promise)

Ubuntu has a way to install it on harddisk ,so Omnia obviously can do the samething by Dos Emulator~That installation thing is run under dos...

OR

U install Xubuntu on a Virtual PC or Vmware PC first , then Clone it onto Omnia , I think itz the same~U can do it by Ghost~The dosbox has this thing to boot Linux~

Yeah , there is this thing called WinCE . I believe this thing can be installed on Omnia and use some Windows Software...

DSL is another choise anyway...(Damn Small Linux). I believe that Omnia's spec is way much better than this ~

Hi !
For Ubuntu "DOS setup" or "copy the CD in a partition setup", see this : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installat...temRequirements

Absolute minimum requirements
[*]Intel 486 processor <- our is ARM
[*]32 MB of system memory (RAM)
[*]300 MB of disk space
Absolute minimum graphical installation
[*]Intel Pentium 66 MHz processor <- IDEM
[*]48 MB of system memory (RAM)
[*]468 MB of disk space
[*]VGA graphics card
I'm not sure it support ARM processor...

By the way, DOS Box is an EMULATOR. Not the full DOS.

Got a problem with OPIE and the last kernel build : the calibrate screen never stop !!!! (done it since 30 mins ^^)
