From one of the guys behind arguably the greatest mobile hardware input method (T9), comes what's shaping up to be the greatest ever software input method, Swype!
It's taken long enough but more and more these days, companies are trying to make our use of mobile devices more friendly. However, as good as the software input methods sometimes are, they can never really beat a full qwerty keyboard or T9-enabled keypad. This new method called Swype, developed by Cliff Kushler (an inventor of T9), looks to change that with some rather innovative guesswork...
As you can see from the CNET video, the speed of this new method is incredibly fast. Eagle-eyed viewers may also have noticed the software running on what appears to be a Touch Diamond which you'd hope means we'll be seeing this on new devices very soon!

Very impressive, but I wonder how good it is to use yourself (ie when you're not the inventor of the method!!).

Same topic in This thread ;)

If you want to try the concept, there is a very similar program already available since early this year- see other thread.

I have used this feature on the iPhone (the WritingPad app does something very similar) and it seems to work decently well, however the iPhone app worked only for notes, e-mails and not the text messages I more often send. When you do have to hunt and peck on that keyboard it isn't as good as the iPhone's standard keyboard unfortunately.

I like this look of this, though. If it's coming out for the Diamond it would be another excuse to switch to O2's Xda Ignito, which I hopefully can get on a good renewal offer.

That Writing Pad application does look practically identical! I'm surprised that either Swype or ShapeWriter don't have a patent on it to stop the other proceeding.

I'm also surprised that ShapeWriter appear to have an iPhone version and an Android (!) version, but no WM version. Seriously... when you think of the size of the markets....

As I alluded to above (in another thread) a very similar program was released for WinMo Touchscreens in February by Dasur who do claim to have patents on it. Not sure which areas are subject to the patent though ;)

I am glad you all liked the concept you have seen. Because unlike Swype which is only an idea for now, there is a company who also manifested this idea and it is available for the public allready, and in many languages I have noticed. I found it in some forum a few weeks ago, and since then I am simply amazed, I am typing in a speed of 80 words per minute after training, and I believe I can improve it!

It's called SlideIT, has a working demo and a purchasing option. I have purchased it a few days ago exactly.

Here is a video for it if you like to see it in action first:

Check it out then: http://www.mobiletex...eIT/SlideIT.php
