If you were in any doubt about how much of a success the 'HTC Touch' has been, then let's put that to rest. HTC sold no less that 2 million of the things between June 2007 and the end of the year!

From Yahoo...

Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC sold 2 million of the Microsoft-based mobile phones it developed to compete with the iPhone last year, the 'Touch' family of handsets.

At last week's Macworld Expo in San Francisco Apple CEO Steve Jobs said his company had sold 4 million iPhones since launch. The HTC Touch uses Microsoft Windows Mobile 6 software and has a touch screen that takes up most of its face, similar to the iPhone. The Touch was launched in June of last year, just weeks ahead of the iPhone.

The company sold 11.8 million handsets overall last year, an roughly 12 percent increase over 2006, executives said.

Strong sales of the handset helped HTC's revenue grow nearly 12 percent last year as well, and the company already sees good prospects for the first quarter of this year.

"The first quarter looks good, it will be a lot better than our first quarter last year," said Peter Chou, president and CEO of HTC, at a year-end party Friday evening. Companies in Taiwan and throughout China typically host parties around this time of year as the Lunar New Year is approaching.

Some of the global economic issues that have hurt stock markets, including subprime mortgages and fears of recession in the U.S. have no impacted HTC so far in the first quarter.

"We've seen no impact from global economic turmoil. We feel pretty good about this quarter," said Chou.

Kudos to HTC. OK, so it's 50% of the sales of the iPhone, but regardless of that there's no denying the Touch has been a massive, massive success for HTC, and with devices like the Dual and Cruise now coming along, it seems to give them a great platform to build on going forward.

Earlier this month HTC announced that revenues for December 2007 totalled NT$ 11,379 million. Total revenues of the fiscal year 2007 reached NT$ 118,592 million with 11.73 percent year-on-year growth. NT$ 118,592 million = $US 3,655 million by the way. :D :D

Have HTC got the WinMo market sewn up? Discuss! :)

When you consider the massive amounts of hype and marketing (TV etc) that the iPhone has recieved, for the touch to have managed 50% of sales is amazing. Unlike the iphone I can't say I've ever seen an advert or news item for the touch (other than in mobile stores).

On that basis I'd say the Touch was more successful and currently held back by a lack of awareness.

  • Interests:The details of my life are quite inconsequential... very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds- pretty standard really. At the age of twelve I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum... it's breathtaking- I highly suggest you try it.

Unless they address the SERIOUS DRIVER ISSUES, many people will be totally dissapointed in their new HTC phones. I am for sure, the Tilt has severe issues.

It doesn't the touch is based in the Omap850... But the touch dual and cruise are based on the msm7200 so if the cruise driver support is garbage I don't think htc can pull out the same answer they gave us about the Tilt since the touch is marketed as a multimedia device compared to the tilt that is a mobile office(quoted from their site).
