Project Gotham Racing is coming to Windows Mobile, courtesy of mobile gaming specialists Glu... and the developers have just revealed more information about the forthcoming title, named 'PGR Mobile'.

Glu said:

San Mateo, Calif. - November 28, 2006 - Glu Mobile, a leading global publisher of mobile games, today unveiled the vehicle lineup for the much-anticipated launch of the mobile version of Project Gotham Racing® (PGR®), the no. 1 action-oriented racing franchise on the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system. PGR Mobile, which will be available to consumers on major wireless carriers around the world in early 2007, is currently being developed for multiple mobile platforms, including Microsoft® Windows Mobile®.

“PGR has set the standard in racing video games, and Glu is striving to make the mobile game as compelling and exciting an experience as Microsoft has done with the franchise,” said Jill Braff, general manager of the Americas, Glu Mobile. “From the physics and graphics in the game to the lineup of today’s hottest cars, we’re offering consumers the most compelling, authentic action-oriented racing game on mobile.”

In a recent preview in which PGR for Mobile was given the “One to Watch” award, WGWorld.com said, “PGR is the new kid on the block and is looking to gain notoriety, and already in its current form has impressive visuals, controls and racing action, enough so to possibly make it one of the elite brands on mobile.”

Each vehicle’s unique physics and engine specifications including top speed and horsepower will be emulated in the game to give an authentic driving experience.

Gamers will have the choice of seven of today’s hottest cars for PGR Mobile, including:
  • Aston Martin V12 Vanquish
  • Cadillac® Sixteen™
  • Ford GT
  • Honda NSX-R
  • Lamborghini Gallardo
  • AMG-Mercedes C-DTM 2006
  • Toyota GT One
“The Project Gotham Racing franchise is loved by millions worldwide, and we're excited to partner with Glu to give gamers a new platform to enjoy it on in the near future,” said Edward Ventura, director of franchise development, Microsoft.

The critically acclaimed Project Gotham Racing series, known for its incredible roster of hot cars and unique kudos point system, is a top-selling racing franchise on the Xbox® video game system. PGR 3 is currently one of the most popular games on Xbox 360. The success of PGR stems from an innovative approach that proves it’s not just about how fast you drive, but how you drive fast.

Originally announced by Glu in May, this is the first time that Glu have spoken about the content included in the game, which is set to be one of the first major franchise games to be available on Windows Mobile.

From a preview published at WGWorld earlier this month...

WGWorld said:

PGR borrows heavily from its console brethren so players can expect to see a number of the luscious cars and distinct locales to be included. As well, since it’s a game of speed and style, the “kudos” system is also in effect. This means that it employs a style-scoring and risk-taking system that rewards you for drifting, drafting, close encounters and excessive air time. It’s not just how you race, but how good you look doing so, and this game does it well.

For those looking at a competitive format, ghost racing is also part of the plan. Users will be allowed to upload their performance so that others can download and go head-to-head to see who is better. To ensure that your entire group of friends can participate, cross-carrier connections are expected.

The racing is pretty sharp with fast-moving vehicles and backgrounds that imitate real world locations to a tee. Opponents are very aggressive in keeping their positions and the tracks also provide a necessary challenge because they are constantly changing direction. To command the vehicle, only one hand is needed for steering and drifting and thankfully, the movement is tight. It’s not like you’re swerving everywhere and are fighting for control because it feels quite good, even when countersteering during a drift. It’s simple and provides a nice feel.

There is no doubt that the competition for racing games on mobile is stiff with a number of known console and mobile-only franchises already established. PGR is the new kid on the block and is looking to gain notoriety, and already in its current form has impressive visuals, controls and racing action, enough so to possibly make it one of the elite brands on mobile.

Interestingly, which we're talking game... there are some rumours i've been hearing about a game-focused HTC device (WinMo of course) currently being pimped around the carriers. No more detail than that at the moment... but watch this space.

With new games, more game friendly handsets and XBox Live Anywhere, could 2007 finally see gaming become a raised priority on Windows Mobile devices?

No DBR9?

He who asks a question looks foolish for 5 minutes. He who doesn't ask a question remains foolish forever.
