Do not ask how to download streams here. Google will help you find how to download streaming audio for offline use
It works a treat with audio files from the BBC, and that's one of the biggest collections of regularly updated realmedia.
I know its possible to convert to wma or mp3 but I'm too lazy for that
1) Go to this page on Real.com, fill in your details and choose the PocketPC version (the alternative being symbian)
2) On the next page choose RealPlayer for Pocket PC 1.1 Preview Release, and you'll download RealOnePlayerPPC11PR.exe
3) Begin the install, but don't click next when the first screen appears
4) Go to Start->Run and type %TMP% and when you press enter, your temp folder will open
5) Find the subfolder called ~rnsetup which is where the install program will have decompressed itself.
6) Open the file REALPLAYER.CAB (my computer opens it in Winzip)
7) Use Winzip to extract all the files from the cab somewhere (e.g. c:\realplayertemp)
8) Rename the following files:
REALPL~1.002 -> RealPlayer.exe
000000gx.001 -> gx.dll
00gecko2.003 -> gecko2.dll
000sipro.007 -> sipro.dll
0000rv20.004 -> rv20.dll
0000rv30.005 -> rv30.dll
0000rv40.006 -> rv40.dll
9) Delete all the other files
10) Copy all those files that you renamed from c:\realplayertemp to the phone
11) Run RealPlayer.EXE on the phone, using SmartExplorer (or equivalent) and click yes to all the warnings.
In running the EXE it will associate .ra and .rm files so you'll be able to click on them and they'll open in realplayer in the future.
Test that you can open a .ra or .rm file in SmartExplorer or File Manager.
If you got an error message saying "file or url not found" follow these steps
- Open up smartexplorer
- go to File->Open->Manage File types...
- scroll down to .ra if it is not on the list then you can add it by going to File->Open->Open With... choosing realplayer and Always open with this app
- Menu->Edit file type
- ensure that the "command to execute" is something like "\storage card\program files\real\realplayer.exe" "%1"
- you need the quotes around the %1
- do the same for .rm and .ram
Newer smartphones have the default rtsp handler associated with Windows Media Player so stations like this one won't open
Open the registry and go to
HKCR\rtsp\Shell\Open\Command
change the Default value from wmplayer to something like this
"\Storage Card\Program Files\real\RealPlayer.exe" %1
Top Tips
use FakeCursor or sphelper to control the buttons.
RealPlayer is a bit intolerant of the volume keys on the phone so try to set the volume. It is worst when listening to a live stream because when interrupted it resumes with the original volume. Pushing the volume buttons with FakeCursor or sphelper works better..
Neither FakeCursor nor sphelper can drag the progress bar to reposition the time bar so i wrote this tool
smartphone friendly version of bbc's listen again pagel
hope this guide is of use to someone.
