TotW: Change the function of the right soft key

This weeks tweak is an absolute corker, and one i've been searching for myself for a while!

The tweak was spotted by pzee, and originally posted by patbisch in our Smartphone Customisation section.

If anyone needs any guidance on editing the registry in order to this tweak, check out any of our previous tweaks in this forum ;)

P

Exactly as it sounds... this tweak will change the functionality of the right hand soft key when on the home screen.

It will work with ALL Smartphones (Tanager, Voyager, Typhoon etc!)

Our target path for editing is:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft

Create a key named 'Home' in here ,and then another key named 'Keys', and then ANOTHER key named '113'.

Next, create the following string values:

Attached File  rightkey1.jpg (23.59K)
Number of downloads: 181

First Value: 'Default'
Value Data: The text you would like on the key ... (GPC on sample screenshot)

Second value: 'Open'
Value data = "PATH OF EXE or LNK FILE" <--- example is "\Windows\tmail.exe" (it is important to enclose them in quotes)

Attached File  rightkey2.jpg (25.66K)
Number of downloads: 147

There is no need to restart device. Just click on the right soft key, press the Home button, and then you'll see the change!

Attached File  rightkey3.jpg (51.64K)
Number of downloads: 108

Cool or what? 8)

Does this effect the way the function of the softkey changes if you get a missed call or a message?

Thanks Paul and patbisch.

@magical trevor
No. It will only change the name and at the same time the program to launch on right softkey access.

If you want to revert to pre-tweaked state (Contacts), just rename 113 to something like 113X.

Is there a way to take it straight into the messages inbox?

Cheers

Yes.
If you want to go to the SMS Inbox you would put this:
Value data = tmail.exe - service "Inbox"

If you want to go straight to open a new SMS you would do this:
Value data = tmail.exe - service "Inbox" -to "" -body "" (note the 2 double quotes after -to and -body)

This assumes that you haven't changed the "FriendlyName" of your SMS account, if you have you need to substitute "Inbox" for whatever you chose as your FriendlyName (if you don't know what that means then you shouldn't need to change the example above!)

Awesome tip. I would assume that the other buttons have a similar reference. Would be nice if we knew what.

That cat's something I can't explain.

That one doesn't work for me I have tried the following two values:

tmail.exe - service "Inbox"

"tmail.exe - service "Inbox""

Both opf which come back with can't find "tmail.exe - service "Inbox"

Have I done something wrong? Or what might be causing the trouble?

With my phone, a C500 with the latest QTEK ROM, it doesnt do anything. I try to change the contactbutton to either inbox or new sms, but it still says contacts (and goes to contacts when pressed)

I've included some screens, maybe one of you can spot the mistake I've probably made

(it seems that tinypic images cant be shown directly on this site)

Thanks in advance..

Try \Windows\tmail.exe -service "Inbox"
Note that there is no space between the "-" and "service"

The only things that are obvious are:
There should be no space between "-" and "service"
"Inbox" might be case sensitive (capital I)

I know pzee's already done these CABs and posted them somewhere, but I can't find them right now, so the attached are 2 new CABs which...

rSoft_NewSMS_v2.CAB - Sets the right softkey to "New SMS", which opens a new blank SMS

rSoft_Inbox_v2.CAB - Sets the right softkey to "Inbox", which opens your SMS Inbox

Thanks to patbisch for the tweak, and pzee for the help working out how to make CAB files! None of the credit is mine.

Very great tweak ! =D>

Do you know if it's possible to change this soft key to have directly a new blank MMS screen ?

Possible.

Try this:
1. Download zip attachment, extract then copy 'Blank MMS' to \Storage
2. Edit HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Home\Keys\113\Open

Set Value to "\Storage\Blank MMS.lnk" (inlcude the quotes)

3. Return to homescreen area. Tweak wont launch on initial right soft key press but is expected to launch on succeeding keypress.

This should open...
